Choosing your wedding DJ is one of the most important supplier decisions you will make, and one of the most under-researched. Couples in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast often spend weeks choosing a florist or photographer but book their DJ based on price alone, or on the first website they find.
This guide covers everything you actually need to know, the questions to ask, the red flags to avoid, and how to find the right person for your specific day.
Start with the experience question
Not years in business, but actual event experience. A DJ who has done 200 corporate events and 10 weddings is very different from someone with 200 weddings. The skill sets overlap but they are not the same. Weddings have a specific structure, a specific emotional arc, and specific moments that need to land perfectly.
Ask for the number of weddings specifically. Ask what kinds of venues they have worked in. Ask whether they have worked at your specific venue, or venues of a similar type and size.
"Reading a wedding crowd is a skill that comes from doing it repeatedly, across hundreds of different rooms and demographics. There is no shortcut."
Ask about their music planning process
A professional wedding DJ should have a clear, structured music planning process. This is not just about collecting a list of song requests. It is about understanding your overall music taste, your guests, the specific moments across the day, and building a setlist that serves all of those things together.
- Do they offer planning sessions? More than one meeting before the day is standard for professional DJs. If they only do a single questionnaire, that is a yellow flag.
- Do they have an online planning portal? A dedicated portal for tracking your setlist, requests and timeline shows an investment in the process.
- Do they ask about what you do NOT want? This is often as important as what you do want. If your DJ does not ask about songs to avoid, they are not thinking carefully enough about your specific day.
Understand what is actually included
DJ pricing in Brisbane and Southeast Queensland varies widely, and it is not always clear what you are getting. Before comparing prices, make sure you are comparing the same thing.
- How many hours are included? A package priced at $1,200 for four hours is different from one priced at $1,200 for six hours. Get the exact performance time in writing.
- Is setup and pack-down included? Most professional DJs include this, but not all. Setup for a full-day wedding can take two to three hours, so this matters for venue timing.
- Is lighting included? Uplighting and dancefloor wash can transform a reception space. Some DJs include this in their packages, others charge separately.
- Are wireless microphones included? Essential for ceremony and speeches. Confirm this is part of the package, not an add-on.
- What backup equipment do they carry? Professional DJs carry redundant gear. If something fails on the night, the show continues.
Check for public liability insurance
Most Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast venues require all vendors to hold current public liability insurance before they are allowed to set up on site. Ask any DJ you are considering for their certificate of currency. If they cannot provide one, do not book them, regardless of how good their price is.
Questions to ask at your first meeting
- How many weddings have you personally performed at?
- Have you worked at my venue before, or a similar type of venue?
- What is your music planning process and how many sessions does it include?
- Do you carry backup equipment? What happens if your main system fails?
- Are you the DJ who will be at my wedding, or could it be someone else from your business?
- Do you hold current public liability insurance?
- What is included in the quoted price, and what is extra?
- How do you handle song requests on the night?
Red flags to watch for
No public liability insurance. Non-negotiable. If a vendor cannot provide this, they cannot legally work at most Brisbane and Gold Coast venues.
No planning process. A DJ who just turns up on the day without structured preparation is a risk. Your day has too many specific moments to leave to chance.
Vague pricing. If you cannot get a clear, itemised quote in writing, that is a warning sign. Hidden costs for lighting, travel, overtime and microphones are common with less professional operators.
No real reviews. Genuine reviews on Google or wedding directories, with venue names and specific details, matter. Generic five-star reviews without context are easy to fabricate.
What to expect from a professional discovery call
A good wedding DJ will offer a free initial consultation, usually 30 minutes, before you commit to anything. In that call, they should ask about your wedding date, venue, guest count, music preferences and the overall vibe you are going for. They should listen more than they talk. And they should leave you feeling like they understand your day, not just your budget.
River City Wedding DJ offers a free 30-minute discovery call for all enquiries across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Book your call here and we can talk through everything on this list together.
